Biography

Originally from Ohio, Doug Keown was born in Cincinnati and raised in Worthington, a suburb of Columbus. He graduated from Worthington High School and went on to attend Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. In 1987, he joined the United States Navy, serving through Desert Shield and Desert Storm before completing his initial enlistment.

Doug continued his education after military service, earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Wright State University in 1993. He relocated to Florida the following year and later completed a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Central Florida in 1997. He worked throughout his career in the mental health field and also pursued doctoral studies in Social Work at the University of South Florida.

Following the events of September 11, Doug returned to military service as a Navy Reservist, serving in Intelligence as a Cryptologist. He deployed multiple times and spent five years on active duty with U.S. Central Command. His leadership and service were recognized through his advancement to Chief Petty Officer, followed by selection for a direct commission. Doug retired from the Navy in 2021 as a Lieutenant Commander.

In addition to his military and professional accomplishments, Doug transitioned from practicing Social Work to teaching it. He currently serves as an adjunct professor of Social Work at the University of Central Florida, where he continues to support the next generation of practitioners.

Doug is a proud member of VFW Post 8087 and AMVETS Post 1992.
